There’s Now A CthulhuWho1 YouTube Channel!

First there were the CthulhuWho1 photo collections on Flickr!
http://www.flickr.com/photos/cthulhuwho1/collections/

Then there was the CthulhuWho1 audio and updates blog!
http://cthulhuwho1.com

And now there is the CthulhuWho1 YouTube channel for videos!
http://www.youtube.com/user/CthulhuWho1

Check out the first “video” from CthulhuWho1; actually a visual version of “Fungi from Yuggoth,” using H. P. Lovecraft’s words, his spelling. and even his handwriting, by way of the Lovecraft Cursive font from the H. P. Lovecraft Historical Society at cthulhulives.org.

And there’s no telling what’s coming next…

Happy Birthday H.P.L. Part 3 – Panel Bonus Files!

What a Birthday!

First the H.P.L. Panel Files!

Then the “Fungi from Yuggoth” Readings.

And now, thanks to Donald R. Burleson (Don, do I call you Dr., Professor, or Don now?) at http://www.blackmesapress.com/ giving his very kind permission for me to pull back the curtain and reveal his (and our) real nature; I’m able to provide an absolute treat/bonus set of companion files for the H. P. Lovecraft Panel files.

At the very end of the sixth file, Dirk W. Mosig mentions a story by Don, that was in Dirk’s current issue of his Lovecraftian fanzine, The Miskatonic. He also mentioned that you might need to keep a small bag handy while reading it.

Well, it just happens, that during the evening of the day before the panel, a bunch of us E.O.D. (Esoteric Order of Dagon) looneys (and my poor tired wife!), while hanging out in our suite in the Adams Hotel (room 702, which had become The Gathering Place), managed to get Don to stop laughing long enough to make a recording of his story, “The Last Supper” (See the photos dated 02-Sep-1978 in http://www.flickr.com/photos/cthulhuwho1/sets/72157624663863218/with/4865067758/ for our faces).

I’m not sure if it’s funnier to listen to the story by itself first, or to the second file which includes the craziness going on before and after his reading. Take your pick.

But when you listen to just the story, you’ll find that by my switching the file to mono, and cutting out the before and after silliness, it almost sounds like a studio recording.

But the reality is the craziness in the second file; with the party-like atsmosphere.

Harlan Ellison gets mentioned a bit in the second file, because he was the Guest of Honor there for IguanaCon, but he was behaving like, well, like Harlan Ellison. His attitude towards many of the fans was expressed by comments like, “I Hate Fucking Fans!” And his attitude toward the press was, “Tell them to go fuck themselves!” So he was an easy target for some of the jokes in the room; even though most of us fully understand why Harlan rightly had his attitude based upon what he’d been through, and the efforts he was making for the Equal Rights Ammendment. But we were all being silly that (and every) night.

And if you only know Don Burleson, from the Panel recordings, or his books, then I have to tell you that I’m not sure if Don is a serious person who is funny, a funny person who is serious, or just the seriously funny guy I know him to be in-person, or in his letters. You are going to hear the funny side of Don in these files. And listen for Dirk Mosig, with his dry humor, telling everyone to listen for their stomaches doing something interesting.

Fungi from Yuggoth Complete – Happy 120th Birthday H. P. Lovecraft!

Well it appears I got it done just in time for H. P. Lovecraft’s 120th. Birthday; which is also my 20th Anniversary since sitting on his grave for his 100th. Birthday.

See: http://www.flickr.com/photos/cthulhuwho1/3810075190/in/set-72157624114618268/ for that occasion!

What I’ve upload here, is truly my most personal birthday gift for H.P.L..

This complete reading of his “Fungi from Yuggoth” is something I’ve wanted to do for several years, as a tribute to the Master; and as a chance to put my voice, and my spin, on one of his most memorable works.

I’ve tried recording his prose, but that didn’t quite work for me; and then I started re-reading “Fungi from Yuggoth” again, now that I’m older, and my Indiana farm-boy voice has been tempered by many years in California; and the poetry seemed to be a fairly good fit, for my voice and temperment.

For the die-hard individuals who believe they can take 40 non-stop minutes of my voice, I’ve included a complete version in a single file; but I’ve also included separate files for every sonnet for those who want direct access to their favorite parts.

I was tempted to add background music; but I decided to let everyone have the raw reading to add their own music to it if they choose to. And I would also like to hear any copies that do get music added to them if anyone puts this files up on their sites. And please recommend any music you think I should try with my copies too.

Please share these files, and ask listeners to give any positive or negative feedback here or at willhart-at-roadrunner-com.

I’ll be adding more files here of Lovecraftian interest soon; but it will be a while before they include my voice (I’m tired of listening to myself!)

Will

ps
I’ve included a pdf copy of “Fungi from Yuggoth” in case my reading isn’t clear enough.
And I have added (23-Aug-2010) everything you need to make a paper CD case for Fungi from Yuggoth in case you burn your files to a disc. Scroll down to the bottom of this post for those files.

Happy Birthday H.P.L.! The 1978 H.P.L. Panel Files Are Here!

First there were the pictures from the 03-Sep-1978, “What if Lovecraft had Lived into the 1960’s?” panel at the 36th World Science Fiction Convention in Phoenix that I posted at http://www.flickr.com/photos/cthulhuwho1/sets/72157624663867000/.

But I promised more than just the pictures; and this week, in celebration of H. P. Lovecraft’s 120th birthday, and in celebration of my own personal 20th anniversary of visiting his graveside on his 100th birthday, I’m releasing the mp3 audio files of this amazing event. And the six files, representing the six sides of the cassettes I used to make the recording, add up to 163 minutes with Professor Dirk W. Mosig, Professor Donald R. Burleson, J. Vernon Shea, Fritz Leiber, Jr., and S.T. Joshi. I ripped the tapes to wav files, cleaned them up (removing several instances of ground-hum), raised the volume to the maximum level, and converted the stereo tracks to mono 44100Hz 160kbps mp3 files; which actually sounds far better than the original stereo because you have every panelist coming out of both speakers, instead of just the side their microphone was on.

I promise you will treasure these files if you are a Lovecraftian.

Thirty two years ago. No VCRs. No DVDs. No CDs. No Cable. No Satellite. No Cell Phones. No Personal Computers. No Internet. So what did we as fans do? We read books. We went to the actual movie theaters. We got together in our homes. We got together at conventions to hang out, watch movies, attend panels, produced fanzines, wrote letters, and more. And some of us made audio recordings of the silliest things too.

If there is enough interest in these files, I’ll try to release some of the behind-the-scenes audio moments from the night before the panel, and also the evening after the panel. Truly funny stuff; including (if he gives permission for me to release it) Donald R. Burleson reading his story, “The Last Supper;” which is the story that Dirk Mosig refers to at the very end of the panel.

H. P. Lovecraft’s, “The Call of Cthulhu;” An Excerpt Read by a Computer

I’ve been collecting text-to-speech software for many years, and I’ve used it for many reasons; so I’m a bit jaded when I try most of the programs that claim to be great.

But I have to admit that TextAloud, from NextUp, when supplied with high-quality voices, can really be amazing to listen to.

So let’s give Peter, a high-quality UK voice a few moments to demonstrate what he can do with H. P. Lovecraft’s writing.

Edgar Allan Poe’s, “The Raven” read by Peter a UK Voice from NextUp

What It Sounds Like When a Female Computer Falls for H. P. Lovecraft

I’m ashamed of myself, but I couldn’t resist letting Rachel (a high-quality UK voice for TextAloud from Nextup.com) say a few suggestive words about H. P. Lovecraft.

H.P. Lovecraft is in the August Issue of Providence Monthly

Did you manage to get your hands on a copy of the August issue of Providence Monthly?

It contains a piece on H. P. Lovecraft in “The Last Detail” section on the back page; and it includes one of my H.P.L. headstone photos from my Flickr collections at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/cthulhuwho1/collections/ .

I’ve just confirmed by a quick call to the Providence Online office in Providence, that they did give me a photo credit; but I have not received a copy of the issue yet. It’s “in the mail.”

In early July, I began promoting the idea for an August piece on “120 Years of H.P. Lovecraft and Providence” to a large number of newspapers and magazines, and Providence Monthly is the only one that responded with a desire to run with it.

Get your hands on a copy of the issue to see what they actually printed; and your comments are welcome!

The Providence Monthly is the free, oversized magazine that profiles the people, places and things that make Providence a great city; and that can be found in bars, restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques, art galleries, or any place around town where people congregate and interesting things happen.

Eighteen thousand copies are distributed each month.

More Lovecraftian Items Have Been Posted on Flickr!

Greetings from Fullerton, California!

I’m still fleshing out the descriptions, notes, tags, and more, but I have added the following Lovecraftian collections to my Flickr Collections page at:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/cthulhuwho1/collections/

“Eldritch Leanings: A Lovecraft Fanzine”. I wanted to get these issues from 1976, 77, 78, and 79, with their articles, comments, letters, and photos (including the color versions for the very first time) up on Flickr before I begin posting the Authors/Letters/Photos Collection that will contain material that references Eldritch Leanings, or that illustrates people mentioned in Eldritch Leanings.

“The H.P. Lovecraft Panel at IguanaCon 1978”. This collection also includes a few prints not used in Eldritch Leanings; and the audio tapes will be soon be converted to mp3 format to be made freely available at a web site near you.

and

“Esoteric Order of Dagon Members”. This collection includes several sets of E.O.D. members at various events; the first set posted was E.O.D. members at IguanaCon in Phoenix in 1978 (including several photos not used in Eldritch Leanings). Thirteen sets have been started in this collection as of the time this note is being written.

I have also added a couple of temporary/secondary photos of the original Cthulhu Mobile from 1978 in the Cthulhu License Plate Collection too.

These new items bring the California Cthulhu / CthulhuWho1 / Will Hart Lovecraftian Flickr Collection size to 1181 items for viewing/downloading; and I hope everyone will find something of interest there.

Please post comments, or send email if you want to see even more uploads like these.
