Yes, I’m doing this reading to help promote the Guillermo del Toro, James Cameron, Universal Studios, 3D movie of, “At the Mountains of Madness.”

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be posting all twelve chapters of H. P. Lovecraft’s, “At the Mountains of Madness,” one chapter at a time, to stretch out the fun; and to give me time to clean each chapter up a bit (and correct the bloopers also) before they are posted here.

I’m also taking a little time between each posting to allow for any feedback, to see if there is an interest in my posting the entire reading.

I have already recorded the first five chapters, but I’ll then work on each of the final seven chapters one-at-a-time after I get the first batch posted.

And now, Chapter Four:

H. P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Rises on South Park Part 2 of 3

It’s a Trilogy! Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the incredible minds, talents, and voices behind South Park have shown far more than a passing awareness of H. P. Lovecraft, with the episode of South Park aired during this past week, S14E12 Mysterion Rises, part two of the trilogy of Lovecraftian episodes; which will conclude this week with “Coon vs. Coon & Friends”.; with far more Cthulhu and Necronomicon plot then you will believe possible on an animated show!

“Mysterion Rises” was truly an amazing feast of Lovecraftian madness!

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD. TURN BACK NOW IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THE SHOW, OR DON’T WANT ANY DETAILS UNTIL YOU DO!

As a Lovecraftian, I’m not sure what was most entertaining about this episode, but I can tell you that whether it was the comic book pages used to illustrate what had transpired in Part 1:

Or the scenes of Cthulhu wrecking the Fun Zone:

Or Cartman trying to convince Cthulhu that he wasn’t going to hurt him:

Or some of the Lovecraftian horrors unleashed on the world:

Or Cartman giving a belly-rub to Cthulhu to get him to join forces:

Or Cthulhu giving a press conference (by way of Cartman) to announce their joining of forces:

Or Cthulhu Cultists speaking of “The Great Old One, Cthulhu,” or of the Necronomicon and the Mythos, or having meetings in South Park, including Computer Geeks, Goths, and more locals, all chanting Lovecraft’s most famous couplet, “That is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange eons, even Death may die!” With their copies of “Arkham Horror,” and their statue of Cthulhu on their shelves:

Or scenes of Cartman now riding on Cthulhu during a rampage of death and terror, all played out to one of the silliest friendship songs ever done as a parody on television:

It all just worked for me!

And having Kenny become obsessed with, “That is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange eons, even Death may die!” Because of the way it seems to relate to his not being able to actually die, once and for all, is the most unexpected crossover between Lovecraft and South Park that I could imagine!

Stay tuned. This weeks episode may top them all!

Television just doesn’t get any better than this!

UPDATE:
You can hear the song that is playing while Cartman rides Cthulhu, and read the lyrics over on YouTube at:

H. P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Rises on South Park Part 1 of 3

Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the incredible minds, talents, and voices behind South Park have done it again with Season 14, Episode 11, “Coon 2: Hindsight.”

The Lovecraftian elements are not the only storyline in this episode, but as a life-long Lovecraftian, seeing Cthulhu on South Park has made my day!

TOTAL SPOILER ALERT! DO NOT READ THIS OR LOOK AT THE SCREEN CAPTURES BELOW BEFORE WATCHING THE SHOW ON HALLOWEEN!

BP Oil, now renamed as DP (Dependable Petroleum) Oil drills into the ocean floor and rips a hole into another dimension; unleashing Elder Ones, Shoggoths, and more Lovecraftian horrors onto beach-goers, fishermen, tourists, and the rest of the unsuspecting public.

DP Oil, in their obviously uncommon wisdom, decides to drill into the Moon to use the gravitational shift they will cause to help create ocean swells and seismic forces that will help them close the dimensional portal.

But what they end up doing instead is unleashing (waking?) Cthulhu himself; which leads to the following commentary from a newscaster:

“This time they appear to have unleashed the dark and mighty Cthulhu. The rise of Cthulhu from another dimension brings about 3000 years of darkness Tom, where we will be driven to madness and made to serve as Cthulhu’s cultist slaves.”

With the newscaster’s final remarks being:

“Cthulhu R’lyeh wgah’nagl fhtagn.”

“Praise the Dark Cthulhu! Long may he reign!”

Television just doesn’t get any better than this!

Many, many Thanks for the initial tip about this episode from Bill L, aka Rhine Frank, of the HP Lovecraft Yahoo newsgroup.

Update: There is a great clip of Cthulhu from this episode at: http://io9.com/5675723/bp-oil-gusher-unleashes-cthulhu-on-south-park

Update 2: It’s a Trilogy! The latest episode of South Park, S14E12 Mysterion Rises, is part two; with far more Cthulhu and the Necronomicon. And next week’s episode will be the concluding part three. An amazing feast of Lovecraftian madness!

H P Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness Chapter 01 Read by William Hart

Please note:
I researched the name, “Pabodie”, for pronunciation; and once I found it was a variant of “Peabody,” and “Paybody,” it was easy to settle on, “Pay-Body” as the choice for my reading. And, there is one point in the text where the sources disagreed on whether the word, “Probably,” or the word, “Probable” should be used; and I had to believe that William Dyer, the man telling his story, would not have been guessing with “Probably,” and would have meant, “Probable” instead. So that was my choice for this reading too.

Wicked Lit Halloween Theatre Festival of New Plays Returns To Los Angeles in October of 2010 at Altadena Mausoleum and Cemetery
Follow-up production to the sold-out run at Greystone Mansion in 2009
World premiere plays include:
Edgar Allan Poe’s The Cask of Amontillado, adapted by Paul Millet
H. P. Lovecraft’s The Unnamable, adapted by Jeff G. Rack
Charles Dickens’ The Chimes, adapted by Jonathan Josephson

LOS ANGELES, CA – Producers Jonathan Josephson, Jeff G. Rack, and Paul Millet have announced the plays, dates and location of the 2010 Wicked Literature: A Halloween Theatre Festival. The annual event features world premiere stage adaptations of classic, Gothic literature performed in alternative venues. Last year’s festival was a sold-out walking tour through Beverly Hills’ haunted Greystone Mansion – this year’s festival will take place from October 21-31, 2010 (10 performances only) at the Mountain View Mausoleum and Cemetery in Altadena, CA. The evening of short works will be comprised of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Cask of Amontillado, adapted by Paul Millet; H. P. Lovecraft’s The Unnamable, adapted by Jeff G. Rack; and Charles Dickens’ The Chimes, adapted by Jonathan Josephson.
Said Millet, “We are thrilled for the opportunity to produce Wicked Lit at Mountain View Mausoleum this fall. With the immense success of the Greystone production last year, it’s clear there is great interest in the alternative venue aspect of Wicked Lit ”

Millet is also the Artistic Director of Nom de Guerre Theatre Guild – an organization that produces Wicked Lit and is planning other special projects for future years. “The evolution of Wicked Lit from a simple idea in 2007 to a second full production in 2010 has been nothing short of remarkable.”
Rack and Josephson are also co-producers of the festival as well as writers and directors. Said Josephson, “Even though this production is a bear to produce, there can be no better opportunity for all us to showcase our passion for theatre, short stories, and alternative experiences all at the same time. Our challenge is to make sure that our final production embodies the absolute best of what each of those fields has to offer – its not going to be easy, but it’s an exciting task to undertake.”
Said Rack “Last year’s Wicked Lit production at Greystone Mansion is a hard act to follow, but I’m confident that our audience is going to be thrilled with what we have in store for them at the Mountain View Mausoleum and Cemetery. I can’t think of a better location for an interactive Halloween show than this.”
Patrons of Wicked Lit will see three short plays over the course of an evening (Cask, Unnamable, and Chimes). Each play will be performed on a different part of the Mountain View Mausoleum and Cemetery campus. Attendees will be lead to and from each play by a Storyguide.
The cast of Wicked Lit includes John T. Cogan, Eric Harris, Pamela Hill, William Joseph Hill, LizAnne Keigley, Shelby Kocee, Ilona Kulinska, Richard Large, Tanya Mironowski, Michael Perl, Katie Pelensky, Brian David Pope, Michael Prichard, Amy Rieckelman, and Ghislaine Sopher-Phillips. The design team includes Art Direction/EFX by Jeff G. Rack, Costume Designer Christine Cover Ferro, Lighting Designer Ellen Monocroussos, Sound Designer Doug Newell and Make-up Designer Julie Pound.
Wicked Lit also produces an annual, region-wide play reading series – details on those events will be announced soon.

A Few Words from Jeff Rack, Received Friday, October 15, 2010 6:56 AM

I am also a big Lovecraft fan and was determined to showcase him in our second Wicked Lit production, especially when I realized we would be able to use the cemetery. As you know, Lovecraft’s work has not been adapted well over the years, and I’m not sure if it has ever been done theatrically, so I wanted to remedy that. My adaptation is actually a combination of “The Unammable” and “The Hound” and a few other Lovecraftian elements from some of his other works and Mythos.

I am really excited about introducing Lovecraft to people who are unfamiliar with him, and especially interested in having Lovecraft fans experience it and hearing their feedback. I do not think they will be disappointed. You move through the cemetery as the story unfolds and it is wired for sound. In the case of the appearance of the “Unammable”, it actually surrounds the audience. The actors are fantastic and my design team is top notch.

Best,

Jeff Rack

S. T. Joshi’s Lovecraft Biography “I Am Providence” Finally Arrives – And Contains a Will Hart (CthulhuWho1) Photo!

Like everyone else, I’ve waited a long time to receive my copy of S. T. Joshi’s very updated and expanded two-volume edition of his H. P. Lovecraft Biography; which I ordered from Hippocampus Press on 21-May-2010.

And at long last, yesterday, Wednesday, 13-October-2010, my signed set arrived here in Fullerton, California.

As a 57-year-old, life-long collector of H. P. Lovecraft related books, I don’t believe I can live long enough to see a finer, or more complete Lovecraft biography.

This two-volume set of 1148 numbered pages (plus Preface, Contents, Abbreviation, Title pages, frontispieces, eight photo pages, and an S. T. Joshi Bibliographic List), fills a shelf-space 9-1/4″ tall x 6-1/2″ deep x 3-1/2″ wide when they are seated together.

A very impressive set that belongs in the heart of any Lovecraftian’s book-shelves.

NOTE: Please click on any of the following images to see a full-size version.

What made the wait for these volumes extra-long for me personally, was the fact that I had been asked on 07-April-2010 for permission to use one of the photographs from my 1990 H. P. Lovecraft Centennial Flickr Collection to illustrate St. John’s Catholic Church, the “Haunter of the Dark” church, in one of the two volumes of the new biography.

Having one of my Lovecraftian photographs included in what I expected (rightly so) to be the ultimate H. P. Lovecraft biography, was the highest honor I’ve ever been offered in the world of Lovecraft collecting. And the chosen photograph, titled “K_06 Federal Hill – St. John’s Roman Catholic Church (1871) – 352 Atwells Avenue (at Sutton Street) – Looking South-East” in the Flicker Collection (see: http://www.flickr.com/photos/cthulhuwho1/sets/72157624113258400/with/3810023709/) was actually taken by me on H. P. Lovecraft’s 100th. birthday on 20-August-1990; just before I headed over to Swan Point Cemetery to visit his graveside.

But having worked in films and television, I’ve learned the hard way that things can change; so I didn’t want to get my hopes up, or to really discuss the possibility of one of my photographs being in the new biography until I could hold the books in my own hands.

All I can say is, “Thank You S. T. Joshi, and Donovan K. Loucks for letting me be a small part of this set of books. I am highly honored, proud, and strangely humbled by this experience.”

For those who already have a set of the books (and if you don’t, what are you waiting for?), take a look at the photo page facing page 977 (see above left), and take a close look at the upper right image for the William E. Hart photo credit (see the center photo above), and take a look at my original photo to see the full-size color version (See above right).

I have to share with you my comments from the Flickr page for this photo, so you’ll understand some very special feelings I have about this image:

The “Free-Will Baptist Church”, home of the Starry Wisdom sect in H. P. Lovecraft’s story, “The Haunter of the Dark.” Demolished 04-February-1992.

H. P. Lovecraft’s description in “The Haunter of the Dark” still says it the best, “Of all the distant objects on Federal Hill, a certain huge, dark church most fascinated Blake. It stood out with especial distinctness at certain hours of the day, and at sunset the great tower and tapering steeple loomed blackly against the flaming sky. It seemed to rest on especially high ground; for the grimy facade, and the obliquely seen north side with sloping roof and the tops of great pointed windows, rose boldly above the tangle of surrounding ridgepoles and chimney-pots. Peculiarly grim and austere, it appeared to be built of stone, stained and weathered with the smoke and storms of a century and more. The style, so far as the glass could show, was that earliest experimental form of Gothic revival which preceded the stately Upjohn period and held over some of the outlines and proportions of the Georgian age.”

Does the light level in this picture seem darker than the other angles of the church? Although it was a sunny day (look at the other pictures before and after pictures K_05A, K_05B, and K_06), for some reason, my camera would not function properly when photographing the church from this angle. And even when I tried to correct shot K_05A in its digital format (see picture K_05B), it kept coming out dark. And that’s what made me think of H. P. Lovecraft’s description of Robert Blake’s experience in “The Haunter of the Dark”: “The afternoon sun came out from behind dispersing clouds, but seemed unable to light up the stained, sooty walls of the old temple that towered on its high plateau.”

Interesting isn’t it?

Gallery Nucleus Presents
AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS: H.P. LOVECRAFT TRIBUTE EXHIBIT
October 16, 2010 – November 8, 2010
Opening Reception: October 16, 2010 (7 pm – 11 pm)
Alhambra, CA – Gallery Nucleus presents an art exhibit tributing H. P. Lovecraft who is considered by many to be the most influential horror writer of the 20th century. Lovecraft’s stories deal with the terror of the unknown or incomprehensible and have inspired modern day talents like Clive Barker, Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, and H. R. Giger. It has been recently announced that one of Lovecraft’s best known stories will receive big screen treatment at the hands of director Guillermo del Toro and James Cameron. It is difficult to deny Lovecraft’s influence on our culture.

The art exhibit promises to touch on the writer’s best known stories such as “The Call of Cthulhu” as well as some lesser known ones showcased in a variety of mediums in both two and three-dimensional format. It features several premier artists currently working in the film industry including Jordu Schell who was the character designer behind the “Na’vi” people depicted in Cameron’s Avatar. Several award-winning illustrators will also offer their interpretations of the classic horror tales including the acclaimed John Jude Palencar whose paintings have been commissioned for several Lovecraft publications. All works will be available for view online as well.

A Robert Bloch Story, Almost Human, on X Minus One 11-August-1955

While looking for the final Fritz Leiber X Minus One episode, I noticed that there was also a single Robert Bloch story adapted for the same series; and it felt like a perfect companion to the actual Robert Bloch audio files I’ve already posted here.

So come with me now to the year 1955 for, “Almost Human.”

NOTE: If you do a normal click on the MP3 file link in this post, WordPress will play it for you.

If you’d like to download and save the file for yourself, and you are using a PC, right-click, to bring up the right-click menu and use the “Save Link As” function to save the MP3 file to your hard drive.

If you’d like to download and save the file for yourself, and you are using a Mac, I believe that would be ctrl + Click to bring up the right click menu, and use the “Download Linked File” function to save the MP3 file to your hard drive. I don’t own a Mac so please correct me if I am wrong!
