O Mundo Fantástico de H. P. Lovecraft – The Inside Front Flap

O norte-americano H.P.

Translation:          The American H. P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) is currently recognized as one of the greatest horror writers of the 20th. century, being admired by many aficionados of the genre. His unmistakable style and distinctive themes influenced many writers over time. Ironically, in life he had only one book published; published in magazines virtually unknown at the time, such as the now famous Weird Tales. However, even with the little recognition, wrote works that are reprinted to this day. It was August Derleth and Donald Wandrei, two of his friends and correspondents, that had the initiative to preserve his work in bound books, with the founding of the publishing house Arkham House soon after the author’s death. Despite this the fame of Lovecraft just came, more broadly, in the mid-1980’s with the advent of RPG Call of Cthulhu, based on one of his mythological stories. The most terrifying of Lovecraft’s work is usually called “Cthulhu Mythos” – a set of ancient legends and superstitions combined with the concepts of science fiction.

Leading a simple life, due to financial hardships, and with an unstable health, Lovecraft spent almost his entire life surrounded by a few friends in the historic city of Providence, Rhode Island State, in New England, his beloved homeland and source – along with his nightmares – of more than a hundred short stories.

His stories have opened new fields of interest in the world of literary expression. Nowadays, many scholars find it difficult to catalog his work, either as ‘horror’, ‘thriller’ or even ‘science fiction’; his fans and admirers around the world think it’s all that and also a little more. His name became a legend, and around him formed a kind of esoteric cult.

Boa noite amigos!

Good evening friends!  I want to leave my thanks registered here to everyone who helped this project of a well-written book about the life and works of H. P. Lovecraft to become a reality. It all started with a simple idea a few years ago that took shape. And the collaborations and incentives were so great that they allowed us to launch the book through a Publisher’s own label EDITORA CLOCK TOWER, whose logo you’re seeing on the side. A publisher that was born to be independent of sordid commercial interests, however its continuation depends on the success of this book, and for this, I count on the cooperation of all of you so we can publicize this our first book, doing reviews on personal blogs of friends, commenting on the book in forums, social networking, offering stories in magazines, newspapers, even if it is a first impression even before completing your reading, anyway… All stand to gain, because if all goes well in the future we plan to launch books with forgotten works of famous writers of the past, digging up a lot of good that is lost… Feel free to use photos and material from our homepage for eventual disclosure of the book. A big hug to everyone, I hope you enjoy and have a great read, because this book was made for you!

O Mundo Fantástico de H. P. Lovecraft – The Inside Rear Flap

          Translation:

This work has, therefore, filled a gap for the Brazilian audience – either by zeal and care in the translations, or by carefully regarding the review, notes, and aesthetics of the book as a whole.

Lovecraft died young, at the age of 46 years, victim of intestinal cancer, leaving a legacy of fantastic stories and shadows never imagined before.

Denílson E. Ricci is the organizer of this work and resides in the city of Jundiaí, São Paulo, his homeland. Longtime admirer of fantastic stories, he met the work of H. P. Lovecraft unusually in mid-2003, when he found a rare book from the author in a treasure chest of the deceased grandfather of an old friend. He has since been dedicated with commitment to research on the author and organization of the site http://www.sitelovecraft.com, one of the most visited in Brazil on the life and work of this great writer.

– Clive Barker, escritor consagrado e diretor do filme ‘Hellraiser’

  1. Fantastic! Congratulations to you, dear Will! Sharing on Facebook.

      Hey Wilum,

      Thank You for the “Congratulations!”

You of all people know that any time my creations are linked to Lovecraft, I’m like a happy father seeing his offspring doing well in life!

      Will

  2. Chris Jarocha-Ernst says:

Congratulations on the use of your photos, but no wonder — they are remarkably clean and well staged. The volume itself looks to be a great introduction to HPL, with most of his classic stories, with one jarring exception: “The Quest of Iranon”? There’s no accounting for taste, but still, this is a particularly whiny piece. I would have chosen “The Other Gods” or even “The Doom That Came to Sarnath” as a more representative piece of Dunsanian fiction, or even “The White Ship”, if the idea of outgrowing the sense of wonder was the theme desired.
