Fritz Leiber Audio Files Part 3: An Hour at Fantasy Faire 7 August 13, 1977

Saturday, August 13, 1977, My wife Jean and I had the great good fortune of being in the audience when Fritz Leiber spoke of many things, including his writing career, Lovecraft, characters, and took several questions too for nearly an hour (from 12:30 pm to 1:25 pm) with a room full of his fans attending Fantasy Faire 7 in the Pasadena Hilton Hotel, in Pasadena, California. He was introduced by Walt Daugherty; and even had Forry Ackerman sitting in the audience.

I was well prepared, and had my tape recorder and microphones ready; so I was able to capture the following recording:

NOTE: If you do a normal click on the MP3 file link in this post, WordPress will play it for you.

If you’d like to download and save the file for yourself, and you are using a PC, right-click, to bring up the right-click menu and use the “Save Link As” function to save the MP3 file to your hard drive.

If you’d like to download and save the file for yourself, and you are using a Mac, I believe that would be ctrl + Click to bring up the right click menu, and use the “Download Linked File” function to save the MP3 file to your hard drive. I don’t own a Mac so please correct me if I am wrong!

Fritz Leiber Audio Files Part 2: Reading from Our Lady of Darkness on Hour 25 SF Radio 25-February-1977

On Friday, the 25th. of February, 1977, Fritz Leiber was in the Los Angeles area preparing for a book-signing/autograph party the next afternoon at A Change of Hobbit SF Book Store in Westwood.  As many of the authors of that time also did, he stopped in at radio station KPFK in North Hollywood to be interviewed, and to do a reading, on the Hour 25 Science Fiction Radio Program, hosted by Mike Hodel, and his co-host Mitchell Harding.

The interview has been covered in the previous post, but I was also lucky enough to catch the reading, and to tape it also; and the audio tapes have survived over 33 years in storage to become the digital audio file you are about to enjoy.

Fritz Leiber, Robert Bloch and Others Discussing H. P. Lovecraft in 1963 – A Complete PDF File, with JPG’s Available Too!

Lovecraft: A Symposium (per the cover), or H. P. Lovecraft: A Symposium (per the title page), or Symposium On H. P. Lovecraft (per the first transcript page) was transcribed from the recording of the panel discussion on H.P. Lovecraft at the 24-October-1963 Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society meeting.

The panelists were: Fritz Leiber, Robert Bloch, Sam Russell, Arthur Jean Cox, and Leland Sapiro; and annotations to the transcription were provided by August Derleth.

As with other hard-to-find documents in my collection, I am providing a PDF file copy of this booklet here, and much higher resolution JPG individual images in both the Fritz Leiber CthulhuWho1 Flickr Collection (along with 212 more Fritz Leiber related images) at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/cthulhuwho1/sets/72157625066410282/ , and in the CthulhuWho1 Robert Bloch Flickr collection (along with 161 more Robert Bloch related images) at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/cthulhuwho1/sets/72157624976191780/

I believe this nearly 47 year-old booklet is now well into the public domain; and I will remove it if a current copyright holder contacts me with a request to do so.

I am providing these scans freely from my collection as a tribute to Fritz Leiber and Robert Bloch.

Here’s the complete Symposium in PDF format:

Please let me know in feedback if there is an interest in more documents and images like this.

The Fanscient No.8 Summer 1949 – The Robert Bloch Issue – A Complete PDF File with JPG’s Available Too!

Most of us weren’t around in 1949, so I’m assuming there aren’t too many copies of The Fanscient No.8, the Summer 1949 issue that focused on Robert Bloch in its “Author, Author” column floating around; so I’m going to share my copy, which I believe is now well into the public domain; I will remove it if a current copyright holder contacts me with a request to do so. I am providing these scans freely from my collection as a tribute to Robert Bloch.

I found this buried little gem in my collection while looking for Robert Bloch and Fritz Leiber material for this blog, and also for my Flickr collections.

The pages are going very brown due to the high acid content of the paper, the lack of protective packaging, and the climate conditions where I live; yet the paper was still flexible enough that I was willing to gently flatten the issue on my scanner.

I’m providing the complete issue here in a pdf format; but you can also download the much higher resolution individual pages (and 165 more Robert Bloch related images) in jpg format from the CthulhuWho1 Robert Bloch Flickr collection at:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/cthulhuwho1/sets/72157624976191780/

Here’s the promised pdf file of The Fanscient:

The Fanscient No.8 Summer 1949 (The Robert Bloch Issue)

If I get enough positive feedback on this and some of the other documents I’m posting, I’ll see what other rare gems I can provide.

Fungi from Yuggoth Wav Format Files for Burning High-Quality CDs

MrWilum (Wilum Pugmire, a Lovecraftian author and friend of many years), over on YouTube, has brought up the topic of my reading of the Fungi from Yuggoth sonnets being made available on CD.

I’m not prepared to go into CD production, but I am willing to post the original wav files here for those who would like to use them to burn their own high-quality CDs.

I have burned my own; and I admit, they do sound better than the mp3 files. Both formats are good, but the CDs made from the wav files have the edge.

Feel free to use the files below to make your own CDs for fun or profit; but please leave my opening and closing credit files on those copies you give away or sell.

I’m including the paper CD template, which uses the graphic shown above, in Microsoft Word doc format for printing of a paper CD case that is very easy to fold into a professional looking CD.

How to Make a Paper CD Case for Fungi from Yuggoth

And I am once again including the complete Fungi From Yuggoth text in a pdf file for those who might want the reference pages:

Please let me know what you think of your CD versus your MP3 files after you have compared them.

By the way, while listening to my own readings, while sitting in my car, I’ve been struck by two things. These sonnets need to be read aloud to be truly appreciated, and the fact that I have a very hard time believing that all but one of these sonnets were written in late December 1929 through early January 1930; with “Recapture” being written in mid-November 1929. Ask yourself when you listen to them. Do these dreams, thoughts, ideas, words and themes sound over eighty years old to you? I’ll wager they don’t.

Robert Bloch Speaks of Lovecraft and More from the Grave

If you are a fan of Robert Bloch, but you didn’t get to attend his induction into the Science Fiction, Horror and Fantasy Hall of Fame on 05-December-1976, then this blog is for you.

If you are a fan of Robert Bloch, but you didn’t get to attend the Dark Fantasy Panel of the 3rd. World Fantasy Convention in the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles October 28-30, 1977, then this blog is for you.

And, if you are a fan of Robert Bloch, but you missed his guest appearance on the Hour 25 Science Fiction radio program on Friday, 15-September, 1978; where he and Walt Daugherty were promoting the upcoming 1978 Fantasy Faire, then this blog is definitely for you!

And if you are looking for Robert Bloch Postcards, Photos, and More; take a quick run over to the newly added set of Robert Bloch materials on the CthulhuWho1 Flickr page at:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/cthulhuwho1/sets/72157624976191780/

Please note, there will be a couple of bonus pdf files somewhere down in this blog, so keep your eyes open!

NOTE: If you do a normal click on the MP3 file links in this post, WordPress will play them for you.

If you’d like to download and save the files for yourself, and you are using a PC, right-click, to bring up the right-click menu and use the “Save Link As” function to save the MP3 files to your hard drive.

If you’d like to download and save the files for yourself, and you are using a Mac, I believe that would be Ctrl + Click to bring up the right click menu, and use the “Download Linked File” function to save the MP3 files to your hard drive.  I don’t own a Mac so please correct me if I am wrong!

The 1st. Science Fiction, Horror and Fantasy Awards Luncheon

Let’s begin with the oldest, and lowest quality recordings; from the 1st. Science Fiction, Horror and Fantasy Awards Luncheon, held 05-December-1976, in the Wilshire Hyatt House Hotel in Hollywood, California.

Pictures of this event can be found in the Robert Bloch set of the CthulhuWho1 Flickr Collection at:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/cthulhuwho1/sets/72157624976191780/

The quality is low, due to the recording being done from the back of the room with a hand-held microphone; but this can be followed quite easily by reading the transcript in Eldritch Leanings Issue #6 starting on Page 5 at:

And if you are a glutton for audio punishment, here’s a very noisy clip of Robert Bloch with several fans (including Yours Truly) in a hallway just before the Hall of Fame Awards luncheon.

The tapes are in sad shape, and the sound varies from poor to great, but the following six mp3 files are the best clips that could be pulled from Robert Bloch’s comments during the Dark Fantasy Panel in the Renaissance Room of the Biltmore Hotel, on Saturday the 29th. of October, 1977, from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m..:

I’ve recently noticed that all of the main Hour 25 people that were there when I was recording the broadcasts, as well as most of the guests I was interested in, have died. Mike and Terry Hodel, Mitch Harding, Robert Bloch, Fritz Leiber, etc., are all gone; and I wanted to share what I captured before I’m gone too. I hope somebody appreciates this stuff in the future!

Final Thoughts on This Current Blog

Pulling the Robert Bloch material together for this blog, and for the CthulhuWho1 Flickr page has taken far more time and effort than I expected; but it has gotten me excited about what I’ll be able to post next for Fritz Leiber! Because I have hours of Fritz Leiber recordings already ready to go…

If you are a Fritz Leiber fan, and you enjoyed hearing his voice in the H. P. Lovecraft panel recordings, which have already been posted here, you’ll soon be in for a multi-format treat of photos, letters, and hours of audio recordings.

Keep checking in here, or at the CthulhuWho1 Flickr Collections, or in the Lovecraft newsgroups, or send an email note saying you’d like to be added to the CthulhuWho1 notification list to willhart-at-roadrunner-dot-com.

Four More Issues of Eldritch Leanings Have Been Found!

While digging through many boxes of Lovecraft related publications, during a search for convention related materials for data to accompany some of the audio files I’ll soon be uploading here, I found a box containing the final sets of Esoteric Order of Dagon (E.O.D.) (Amateur Press Association) mailings that I had received as a member in the late 70’s and early 80’s.

Within these mailings were the final four mimeographed issues I published before my membership lapsed due to inactivity on my part. Mailing 38, the April-May 1982 Roodmas mailing was the last one I ever received.

These four issues have now been added to the Eldritch Leanings Collection of the CthulhuWho1 Flickr page at:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/cthulhuwho1/collections/72157624539455829/

The four issues mostly contain short book reviews and ramblings; with the nostalgic item for me being the E. Hoffmann Price Petition in issue 16 that I created to try to get a publisher interested in, “Friends of Yesteryear: Fictioneers & Others.”

E. Hoffmann Price’s book was eventually published by Arkham House in 2001, under the title, “Book of the Dead, Friends of Yesteryear: Fictioneers & Others;” roughly thirteen years after his death.

Although my petition, which was used to collect signatures on at least two continents, and at numerous conventions, may have had nothing to do with the actual publication of the book so many years later, I’m still very glad to have made the effort when I did.

Now that the final issues of Eldritch Leanings have been posted to Flickr, I can get back to the audio-visual work I’m doing for those interested in Robert Bloch and Lovecraft… Coming soon!

At Long Last The August Issue of Providence Monthly Has Arrived!

I began to think I’d never see a copy, but after many phone calls and emails, my “contributor’s” copy arrived today, 03-September-2010.

If you haven’t found a copy for yourself yet, there were 18,000 copies printed, so you should be able to find one if you’d like to add this to your collection.

These are very large images in their full size (10″ X 13.5″, scanned at 600 d.p.i.) so downloads may take time.

==========================

On 06-July-2010, I sent the following message out to newspapers and magazines across the country:

Greetings from Fullerton, California!

Every news program, publication, or service, needs current cultural, geographical, historical, human-interest, and travel stories; and I’m hoping you will consider doing a piece in August on H.P. Lovecraft and his beloved home-city of Providence, Rhode Island.

August 20, 2010, will mark the 120th. anniversary of the birth of H.P. Lovecraft in Providence, Rhode Island.

Howard Phillips Lovecraft (August 20, 1890 – March 15, 1937) was one of the most influential cosmic horror writers of the 20th century. And is considered by many to be the father of modern horror.

His influence can still be seen in movies and television, games, music, art, comics, plays, podcasts, radio dramatizations; and even plush Cthulhu dolls based upon his most famous creation. His works are still affecting modern writers, i.e., Stephen King, film makers, i.e. John Carpenter, Stuart Gordon, and Guillermo del Toro, and the gaming industry with all of its Call of Cthulhu related role playing games. And many of his fictional creations, e.g., Arkham, Miskatonic University, Cthulhu, the Necronomicon of the Mad Arab Abdul Alhazred, and Innsmouth often make appearances in literature and films.

Their are articles, bibliographies, biographies, college courses, conventions, documentaries, events, film companies, film festivals, library collections, license plates, newsgroups, periodicals, radio broadcasts, tours, and websites dedicated to him.

While Lovecraft is best known for his weird-fiction, he also wrote on Philosophy, Science, and Travel, contributed Reviews and Literary Criticism, was very active in Amateur Journalism, and most of all, was a voluminous letter-writer; with an estimated 100,000 plus (sometimes 70 pages and longer) letters written in his lifetime.

The bulk of his fiction and poetry was focused on New England in general; but his one true love was the city of Providence, Rhode Island. His love for the city of his birth was so great, that his headstone says, “I Am Providence.”

Brown University in Providence maintains the single largest collection of original and Lovecraft related materials in the Special Collections section of the John Hay Library.

Yes, I have had CTHULHU license plates in California for thirty years.
Cthulhu was the most famous creature/being in the fiction of
H.P. Lovecraft.

And on July 7th., I received the following letter from Providence Monthly, which lead to the above issue:

Will,

We received your email about the Lovecraft anniversary, and we think it’s a great fit for the back page (“The Last Detail”) of our August issue. Do you have a hi-res photo of Lovecraft’s grave stone that you can send me? (Vertical orientation would be best.) We will, as you note on your Flickr page, credit you and send you a copy of the magazine.

Thank you,
John

An Apology: The ATMOM Script Post Has Been Removed at the Request of the Producer

I have received a message this morning informing me of the need to remove the “At the Mountains of Madness” script file immediately to avoid a DMCA notice for linking to copyrighted material.

I have complied as soon as I received the message as I had stated I would.

I do apologize to those who came here wanting to look at the script, which has now been identified as something more than just a fan-fake; and has been removed for legal reasons.

I encourage everyone to support the filmmakers in their efforts to get this film made, promoted, and seen by as many people as possible; and my efforts have strictly been intended to help build excitement towards those goals.

Everyone has been talking about the possibility of Guillermo del Toro making his 3D film version of H. P. Lovecraft’s, “At the Mountains of Madness”, with the financial backing of James Cameron and Universal Studios.

And now, James Cameron, in an exclusive August 16th. interview on Shock Till You Drop, has confirmed the project as being a done deal, that doesn’t have 100% of the details worked out just yet:
