Gallery Nucleus Presents
AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS: H.P. LOVECRAFT TRIBUTE EXHIBIT
October 16, 2010 – November 8, 2010
Opening Reception: October 16, 2010 (7 pm – 11 pm)
Alhambra, CA – Gallery Nucleus presents an art exhibit tributing H. P. Lovecraft who is considered by many to be the most influential horror writer of the 20th century. Lovecraft’s stories deal with the terror of the unknown or incomprehensible and have inspired modern day talents like Clive Barker, Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, and H. R. Giger. It has been recently announced that one of Lovecraft’s best known stories will receive big screen treatment at the hands of director Guillermo del Toro and James Cameron. It is difficult to deny Lovecraft’s influence on our culture.

The art exhibit promises to touch on the writer’s best known stories such as “The Call of Cthulhu” as well as some lesser known ones showcased in a variety of mediums in both two and three-dimensional format. It features several premier artists currently working in the film industry including Jordu Schell who was the character designer behind the “Na’vi” people depicted in Cameron’s Avatar. Several award-winning illustrators will also offer their interpretations of the classic horror tales including the acclaimed John Jude Palencar whose paintings have been commissioned for several Lovecraft publications. All works will be available for view online as well.

From The Cover Letter:

“I hope that this finds you well. Gallery Nucleus is a premier illustrative and entertainment arts gallery located just outside of downtown LA. We have been hard at work organizing a tribute art exhibit to none other than H.P. Lovecraft. The exhibit is set to open this Saturday and features some of the best in the biz. John Jude Palencar is contributing three of his published Lovecraft book covers. You can read more about the event and the twenty contributors here: http://gallerynucleus.com/gallery/exhibition/249

Would you be able to help spread the word about this event? These artists have put blood, sweat, and tears into these works and I am hoping for as many eyes on them as possible. There is an opening reception this Saturday (Oct 16) starting at 7pm and all of the works will be viewable online at the stroke of midnight here: http://gallerynucleus.com/gallery/pieces/249

Lovecraft-related costumes, edwardian/steampunk attire is quite welcome and even encouraged for the opening. Free admission & refreshments plus artists in attendance.

I’ve attached a few of the featured works and a press release for your reference. Please let me know if you have any questions and I promise a quick reply. Thank you for your help!

Wade Buchanan”

Looks like a great show. I really like John Jude Palencar’s way of working–his subtle use of color and the way he uses acrylic as if it were egg tempera, modeling the shapes with thousands of little strokes of paint . I saw some of his work a few years ago at the Society of Illustrators gallery space in New York a few years back but not any of his Lovecraft covers. I probably can’t make it down to LA in the next month, but I will definitely have to explore the website. Thanks for posting the info.

  2. I really want to come to the opening of this show on Saturday night. Does anyone else want to go with me from the South Bay area?

      Denise,

I’m very happy that we both made it to the Lovecraft Exhibit in Alhambra last night.

      There were several pieces on display that I, on one hand, would love to own, finances and space allowing;
and yet, I also love the idea of such works being somewhere for everyone to socially enjoy just the way we did last night.

Maybe I’m getting too old to want to possess everything I see; or I’m too aware of having a home that is
already full-to-the-brim with a lifetime of collecting.

Meeting you was a pleasure on multiple levels; it is always a pleasure to meet other Lovecraftians (we’re all strange in our own ways, perhaps it’s the “Outsider” complex, no two of us are ever exactly alike in our specific areas or levels of interest), and women, with an interest in Lovecraft, are so rare in my experience, that I find myself absolutely fascinated, and I can only envy those who get to share conversations, ideas, experiences, books, movies, poetry, etc., with such a wonderful companion.

      Thank You for Being You!

Your Humble Servant in Lovecraftian Matters,

      Will

      ps
I’ll send this same missive by email in case you miss this blog.

      Will
