     Longtime fans of H. P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, H. Warner Munn, George Sterling, Joseph Payne Brennan, and many others, are very familiar with Frederick J. Mayer.

     For those needing an introduction, Frederick J. Mayer, of Sacramento, California, is a graduate of California State University; and he is an artist, author, editor, journalist, poet, and a reviewer.

     You might know him as the founder of the Clark Ashton Smith Poetry Awards (1978).

     You might know him from his Introduction, cover art, and design for Joseph Payne Brennan’s WEBS OF TIME.

     You might know him for being nominated for eight Balrog Awards; and for winning three!

     You might know him as the Founder and Head Writer for the award-winning radio drama series “Arkham Theater.”

     You might know him for his works that have appeared in numerous magazines, including: Eldritch Tales, Grue, and Lovecraft’s Disciples.

     You might know him for his contributions to the Scarlet Literary Magazine:

         O norte-americano H.P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) é reconhecido atualmente como um dos maiores escritores de horror do século XX, sendo admirado por muitos aficionados ao gênero. Seu estilo e temática inconfundíveis influenciaram muitos escritores ao longo do tempo. Ironicamente, em vida teve apenas um livro publicado; publicou muito em revistas praticamente desconhecidas na época, como a hoje famosa Weird Tales. Entretanto, mesmo com o pouco reconhecimento, escreveu obras que são reimpressas até hoje. Foi de August Derleth e Donald Wandrei, dois de seus amigos e correspondentes, a iniciativa de preservar sua obra em livros encadernados, com a fundação da editora Arkham House logo após a morte do autor. Apesar disso a fama de Lovecraft só veio, de forma mais abrangente, em meados da década de 1980 com o advento do RPG Call of Cthulhu, baseado numa de suas histórias mitológicas. A essa parte mais aterradora da obra de Lovecraft convencionou-se chamar de “Mitos de Cthulhu” – um conjunto de lendas antigas e superstições aliadas a conceitos de ficção científica.

         Levando uma vida simples, devido a privações financeiras, e com uma saúde instável, Lovecraft passou quase toda sua vida cercado de poucos amigos na cidade histórica de Providence – Estado de Rhode Island, na Nova Inglaterra, sua amada terra natal e fonte -junto com seus pesadelos – de mais de uma centena de contos.

         Suas histórias abriram novos campos de interesse no mundo da expressão literária. Hoje em dia, muitos acadêmicos acham difícil catalogar sua obra, seja como ‘horror’, ‘suspense’ ou mesmo ‘ficção científica’; seus fãs e admiradores ao redor do mundo acham que é tudo isso e também um pouco mais. Seu nome tornou-se uma lenda, e em torno dele criou-se uma espécie de culto esotérico.

          Translation:          The American H. P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) is currently recognized as one of the greatest horror writers of the 20th. century, being admired by many aficionados of the genre. His unmistakable style and distinctive themes influenced many writers over time. Ironically, in life he had only one book published; published in magazines virtually unknown at the time, such as the now famous Weird Tales. However, even with the little recognition, wrote works that are reprinted to this day. It was August Derleth and Donald Wandrei, two of his friends and correspondents, that had the initiative to preserve his work in bound books, with the founding of the publishing house Arkham House soon after the author’s death. Despite this the fame of Lovecraft just came, more broadly, in the mid-1980′s with the advent of RPG Call of Cthulhu, based on one of his mythological stories. The most terrifying of Lovecraft’s work is usually called “Cthulhu Mythos” – a set of ancient legends and superstitions combined with the concepts of science fiction.

         Leading a simple life, due to financial hardships, and with an unstable health, Lovecraft spent almost his entire life surrounded by a few friends in the historic city of Providence, Rhode Island State, in New England, his beloved homeland and source – along with his nightmares – of more than a hundred short stories.

         His stories have opened new fields of interest in the world of literary expression. Nowadays, many scholars find it difficult to catalog his work, either as ‘horror’, ‘thriller’ or even ‘science fiction’; his fans and admirers around the world think it’s all that and also a little more. His name became a legend, and around him formed a kind of esoteric cult.

         Eight hundred copies were printed of the First Edition of this beautiul book, with most of the copies pre-sold to the initial supporters of this project; whom all got their names listed in the First Edition in the Eldritch Society section near the back of the book (including Yours Truly).

The Home of Charles Dexter Ward

Happy Belated 122nd. Birthday Grandpa Theobald!

In my mind, H. P. Lovecraft’s, The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, reads more like a work of non-fiction, rater than fiction; and because of this, I hope you’ll listen to my reading and performances as an audio documentary with reenactments by all of the voices that have escaped from my head, and been brought to audio life, including Marinus, Theodore, Joseph, Charles, Jedediah/Simon, Edward, and several others.

My Favorite Providence Panorama!

This is the closest you will ever get to what I saw on August 20th., 1990, from the (now closed to the public) rooftop of One Financial Plaza!

Download this panorama, then zoom in until it fills your screen from top to bottom, and pan from left to right to get a real sense of what I saw when I looked out over College Hill.

This view still haunts my dreams; and I now share it with you!

I’ve been experimenting with Autostitch, a free, fully-automatic, 2D photo-panorama image stitcher, to create panoramas of some of the photos I shot in Providence and Boston in 1990 (which are on display at http://www.flickr.com/photos/cthulhuwho1/collections/); and when the pictures blend together properly, they can can create an image that is far closer to what I saw with my naked eyes; and they are wonderful.

Some of the experiments were hard to crop cleanly, but I decided to leave those images online too, because they still display a wider world view.

A decade by decade chronological collection of book and magazine covers, story pages, photographs, letters, documents and more, to chronicle the literary life of the writer E. Hoffmann Price.

The 1920′s through the 2000′s decades of this collection are now fully stocked, and the 2010′s are starting to be uploaded. There will also be ongoing additions and corrections to each decade.

The magazine images are arranged monthly by their titles; the books are being arranged by their publication dates, and the personal letters are being arranged by letter date or postmark.

The rest of the images from the 2010′s will be uploaded as soon as they are finalized.

A MINI BIO

E. Hoffmann Price (Edgar Hoffmann Trooper Price)

Between 3-July-1898, the day he was born in Fowler, California, and 18-June-1988, the day he died in Redwood City, California, he squeezed more out of Life than a dozen others might have.

A very prolific American writer of popular fiction for the pulp magazine marketplace, who was most widely known as a collaborator with H. P. Lovecraft on “Through the Gates of the Silver Key”; and he was one of the group that included Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, and Clark Ashton Smith, who all wrote regularly for editor Farnsworth Wright’s Weird Tales Magazine.

And yet, he was so much more.

During his life, he managed to travel widely and maintain friendships with many other pulp writers and fans.

He was also the only pulp writer known to have met face-to-face with all three of the great legendary Weird Tales writers, Robert E. Howard, H. P. Lovecraft, and Clark Ashton Smith during his many trips back and forth across the country.

As a teenager, he joined the U.S. Army and served in the Philippines, and along the border with Mexico. During World War I, he served in the American Expeditionary Force in France. After the war, he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point before moving on to a later hitch with the Coast Artillery in 1923-24.

As his military career was winding down, he had begun writing; and continued to do so while he worked as a supervisor for Union Carbide, from 1924 to 1932, before becoming a full-time writer.

He was a champion fencer, boxer, drinker, horseman, swordsman, an amateur Orientalist, and a student of the Arabic language; he truly was a, “real live soldier of fortune,” as author Jack Williamson called him in his 1984 autobiography Wonder’s Child.

In his later years, up until his death in his late 80′s, he worked on his novels, was a steady contributor to fanzines, and wrote about his fellow writers, their works, and the early pulp days.

From 1924, when he had his first published story in Droll Stories, to 1955, and the death of the Pulp Magazine era, when he had one of his last pulp stories published in Western Story Roundup, under his own name, and under many personal and house pseudonyms, E. It should be noted, for those looking for more E. Hoffmann Price stories published under house pseudonyms, that among the many authors given this treatment, Hugh B. Cave was also published under the house names, William Decatur, Paul Hanna, R. T. Maynard, and John Wayne; while author Robert E. Howard had two tales reprinted under the William Decatur (Revenge by Proxy) and R. T. Maynard (Nothing to Lose) names too.

E. Hoffmann Price knew how to write, and he knew how to sell.

And yet, he is still today primarily known as a Lovecraft collaborator and Weird Tales writer who also wrote adventure stories with Oriental settings and atmosphere; even though most of his life’s work had nothing to do with Lovecraft or Weird Tales.

In his obituary in the June 30, 1988 edition of the San Francisco Chronicle, he was called a, “Science-fiction writer.”

I suspect that part of the problem is that most genre collectors have little interest in other genres than their favorites, Detective, Mystery, Weird Tales, or Western Tales; each ignores the other, and fails to look at the sum total of Price’s incredible output. And writing under many different pseudonyms, and using rewritten versions, or renamed versions of many stories also adds to the confusion.

He was awarded the World Fantasy Award in 1984 for Lifetime Achievement.

I just got word today, that 60-year-old Wilum has been admitted to a Seattle Hospital due to the worsening condition of his heart disease.

It looks like his heart may be in worse shape than anyone imagined; so there is no way to tell how much time he still has left to share with us.

I spoke with him a few minutes ago by phone, and he said I could reveal that he is in the hospital; but he’s not sure when (or if) he’s going home from there.

He has no computer access in the hospital, but I hope everyone will keep him in their thoughts, prayers, emails, and blogs; and that we will all be aware of just how special a person he is, and how much he has brought to each of our lives.

Wilum H. Pugmire Is Out of the Hospital!

Good News!

Wilum Hopfrog Pugmire is tired, and in great need of peace, quiet, a hot bath, and some home bed-rest, but he is at least well enough to return home!

I spoke with him at 10:30 a.m. this morning as he was being released from the hospital, and he asked that everyone be patient with him being pretty quiet online on Facebook, YouTube, and in Emails for awhile; while he takes care of health and family matters.

When he is up to it, he will put out a short YouTube and Facebook message for everyone, but he is not currently up to dealing with a flood of communication.

Let’s just all celebrate that he is still with us!

Happy 121st. Birthday H. P. Lovecraft!

One year ago today, I released my reading of H. P. Lovecraft’s cosmic sonnet sequence, “Fungi from Yuggoth” as a 120th. birthday present to the old gentleman.

And now, one year later, I hold in my hands, Wilum H. Pugmire’s “Some Unknown Gulf of Night,”  published by Arcane Wisdom; a darkly beautiful, exotic, erotic, numbered collection, containing a prose poem companion for each of the sonnets in Lovecraft’s “Fungi from Yuggoth;” with strong influences of Oscar Wilde, Edgar A. Poe, Baudelaire and the Decadents too.

I can’t help but see the publication of “Some Unknown Gulf of Night” as a wonderful 121st. birthday present to H. P. Lovecraft; and I can’t help being doubly excited by Wilum’s claim that it was his listening to my readings of Lovecraft’s sonnets, that I posted on YouTube last year, that finally inspired him to write the prose poems he had been meaning to write for a long time.

I am also extremely honored that my readings, and inspiration, have led Wilum to dedicate this book to me!

Lovecraft and His Wife in Color!

No. Not Howard and Sonia; but Margaret and Danny!

I’m sorry, but I couldn’t resist that…

Charles “Danny” Lovecraft, the publisher of P’rea Press Books in Australia (http://www.preapress.com/) and his wife Margaret Barnes-Lovecraft, were on the last leg of their most recent American vacation when they stopped in Los Angeles for a few days before boarding their flight home to Australia.

My wife Jean and I drove up to Hollywood late on Friday evening (28-Jan-2011) to meet and greet Danny and Margaret on their first night in the area; and Danny and I exchanged a few collector’s items.

The books that Danny gave to me were all wonderful titles that I didn’t have in my collection yet, including:

But the truly unexpected treat that he and Margaret gave to me, was a copy of the MythosCon 2011 Program Booklet, that they had made priceless by having it signed by Fifty-One(!) of the attendees, including, Thea Alexander, Martin Andersson, Peter Atkins, Mark Boniece, Jason V. With the Lovecraft’s having already been to Phoenix, Sedona, Fresno, Yosemite, Sacramento, Auburn, Berkely, Pacific Grove, Carmel, Hearst Castle, and MythosCon 2011 (which I couldn’t attend this year), I wasn’t sure what I could show them in the Los Angeles area that would compare with the sights they had already seen; but I gave it my best shot!

Over the next few days, we covered many freeway and surface street miles to see numerous famous and infamous spots, far too many to cover all of them in this brief over-view; and to have several great Vegan meals that even an Omnivore like myself could enjoy.  My Vegan House in Hollywood (http://myveganhouse.com/Home.php), and the two-story Whole Foods in Pasadena (http://wholefoodsmarket.com/stores/arroyo/) were both great dining experiences!

We passed by and through many famous locations, like the 2nd. Street Tunnel in Los Angeles, which is seen in so many movies; including Bladerunner:

We saw the death sites of Janis Joplin, John Belushi, River Phoenix and others:

We saw the outside of places like The Beverly Hills Hotel:

But we found it more fun to visit the inside of the Men’s Restroom in the Will Rogers Memorial Park across the street, where George Michaels gave his private performance before his arrest. If you have a good sense of humor, you might appreciate the fact that one of Will Rogers‘ most famous quotes was, “I never met a man that I didn’t like.”:

We saw many Beverly Hills Mansions while driving through the celebrity filled neighborhood; mostly through gates, and over hedges:

We got to spend a few minutes with the legendary poet and scholar Donald Sidney-Fryer in his home in Los Angeles; but due to a scheduled tour elsewhere, we had to leave far too soon:

With reservations made weeks in advance, we were able to have a private multi-hour tour through the beautiful Virginia Robinson Estate and Gardens in Beverly Hills (http://www.seeing-stars.com/Live/RobinsonEstate.shtml, and http://www.robinsongardens.org/index.html):

Wherever we went in the Hollywood area, we could see the Hollywood Sign and the Griffith Park Observatory; which constantly reminded us of where we were:

In the North Hollywood Park, we met a Nutty Local Resident that we couldn’t resist sharing a snack with:

When we went to the historic Greystone Mansion and Park in Beverly Hills (not very well known to tourists, but a must-see sight if you are a film fan!), we got to see a television crew in action shooting part of Season 8 Episode 17 of NCIS; which was broadcast on 01-March-2011 as One Last Score (http://www.seeing-stars.com/live/Greystone.shtml, and http://www.greystonemansion.org/):

By making reservations a couple of weeks in advance, we were able to spend several hours exploring and photographing the phenomenal Greek, Roman, and Etruscan Antiquities in the stunning Roman-inspired architecture and gardens of the Getty Villa, which over-looks the Pacific Ocean in Malibu (http://www.getty.edu/visit/):

We visited several well-known movie and television stars, including Don Adams, Jack Benny, Mel Blanc, Errol Flynn, Michael Landon, Darren McGavin, Rod Steiger, Jimmy Stewart, Spencer Tracy, and even Vampira.

And we even had Harvey the Pooka join us in Glendale when we went to visit with Jimmy Stewart:

We paid our respects to two of the great Filmmakers, Albert “Cubby” Broccoli (the Producer of most of the James Bond films), and Walt Disney:

At the Hillside Memorial Park (Jewish Cemetery), we found an example of what inspired Leonard Nimoy to create his “Live Long and Prosper” hand-sign:

We enjoyed an all-star classic comedy tour with, Jack Benny, Milton Berle, Marty Feldman, Curly Howard, Moe Howard, Buster Keaton, Stan Laurel, and Larry Fine (although the Photo Police would not allow us to take any pictures with him!):

We got up-close and personal with the inner workings of the Warner Brothers Burbank Movie Studios by taking their VIP Tour (http://vipstudiotour.warnerbros.com/).  And we have to thank Charlie Sheen for being a no-show the week we were there (he’d been out about a week or so at that time); which made it possible for us to enter and visit his “Two and a Half Men” sound stage and sets during our tour!

And when we found Merlotte’s in the Jungle section of the Warner Bros back lot, we tried to stop for a bottle of True Blood, but they were closed for the season!

We visited numerous new and used book stores, and found the Mystery & Imagination Bookstore in Glendale to be among the best still open in the Los Angeles area (http://www.mysteryandimagination.com/):

And finally, at the end, what better last-minute souvenir or gift shop could a horror fan find in Los Angeles, than “Skeletons in the Closet,” the Gift Shop in the Los Angeles Coroner’s Office? And it is located in the old Los Angeles General Hospital building (http://www.lacoroner.com/Default.aspx). A Gift Shop at the Coroner’s Office; now that’s what I call Black Humor!
